FAQs
Attendance

To be successful, students need to attend school regularly.
Parents can encourage proper attendance by ensuring that, their child: gets
enough rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and has adequate time to get to school.
Absences:
Under state law and local Board of Education Policy and
Procedures, all children ages 5-16 must attend school daily. Attendance
(tardiness and absence - legal or illegal) is tracked daily.
Students absent or leaving school early due to illness, doctor's appointment, or
injury are expected to bring a note upon return to school. The note must be signed by the parent,
indicating the dates of absence and the reason for each absence.
Notification to Parents:
Under Attendance Policy,
attendance letters are sent to the parent after absences reach six days, ten days, and again after
twelve days. Letters may also be sent when absences reach five days in the same marking period.
Excessive absence or tardiness extending beyond six days in a semester is referred to the school’s Student
Support Team, the Pupil Personnel Worker, or the court for action. Retention in the same grade may also
occur. In addition, for all absences in excess of five consecutive days, a doctor's note is required for absences to be
excused.
Tardiness:
Students arriving after 9:15 A.M. are marked tardy; however,
depending upon the time they arrive, the student may be considered absent for one-half day.
A parent/guardian must accompany your child to sign them in upon their late arrival.
Car Loop Procedures

We have separate bus and car
lanes for arrival and dismissal of our students. In order to keep your children
safe and maintain an orderly process each morning and afternoon, please
remember:
• The car loop is a drop off area only.
• No one may park in the car loop.
If you need to get out of your car for any reason, please
park in the parking lot. There will be two teachers on duty to ensure the safety
of your children.

Teachers will develop a discipline plan, review it with students, post the rules in the classroom, and alert parents to their existence and use. Teachers will work with students using positive and acceptable behavior. Teachers will handle routine behavior problems at the time of the occurrence in the classroom.
Step Two: Disruptive and/or recurring behavior that interferes with classroom instruction and which cannot be solved by the classroom teacher may result in an informal referral or time-out to the administrator. Teachers will contact parents when this step occurs.
Step Three: Serious disruptive and/or recurring behavior that interferes with classroom instruction and cannot be solved by the classroom teacher should be referred to the principal.
The following will occur:
1. Student is removed from the class with the knowledge of the main office. 2.
The parent/guardian is being notified. 3. The principal will determine
appropriate actions; suspension (1-5 days); detention; or in-school suspension.

the following way: Walkers and car riders will be dismissed first at 3:30 P.M.
Bus riders will be called as their bus arrives. No student should cross the
driveway, walk in between the buses or cars or leave the sidewalk for any reason
unless the duty teacher crosses with them. After students leave the building,

Field Trips
Field trips are designed by teachers to be an integral part of the school
curriculum. They provide opportunities for enrichment, broadening of the
classroom learning, and experiences which are not possible within the confines
of the classroom. They are planned to enhance and allow application of lessons
learned in the classroom. They are carefully planned to cater to the interests
and needs of the elementary school-aged child. As with any curricular activity,
all students are expected to participate. Parents must sign permission slips
before a child is permitted to leave school grounds on a field trip.
Since trips are arranged for appropriate age elementary
students, it is not possible to accommodate siblings. Parents who are
chaperoning a group of students have an enormous commitment. It is unfair to the
students and the classroom teacher to add to that responsibility by including
other children.
Chaperone Guidelines and Responsibilities
In order for field trips to be educational, fun, and safe,
the following guidelines and responsibilities are provided for chaperones:
-
Chaperones are selected at the discretion of the teacher.
-
The school and the chaperones will make every effort to
assure the safety of the children.
-
At no time should the chaperone leave a child (children)
unattended.
-
Depending on the age, the children should travel in groups
designated by the classroom teacher.
-
Restroom activities must be supervised in a manner
befitting the age of the children.
-
Siblings cannot be accommodated on field trips.
-
Chaperones are expected to aid the teachers in the
discipline of the children. Any problem behavior should be reported to the
teacher promptly.
-
If a selected chaperone is unable to attend, please contact
the school as soon as possible.
-
Students must ride the bus to and from the planned activity
and not with a chaperone.
-
Chaperones may need to provide
their own transportation.
Homework
Homework
is required for student achievement. A teacher’s evaluation of homework is
reflected in each student’s grades. In elementary school, homework is reflected
in a grade or code given for expected student behavior.

Lost and Found
All
articles found in the school or on the school grounds are placed in the lost and
found box. Parents are encouraged to claim lost items. To avoid loss,
student's clothing should be labeled with first and last name.
Maryland School Assessment (MSA)
As a
result of the No Child left behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) legislation,
students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 10 attending public schools in Maryland
are administered the Maryland School Assessment annually. These tests are
designed to measure student, school, county, and statewide achievement in the
areas of reading and mathematics. The MSA Science will be administered to all
students in grades 5 and 8. This test will be an on-line test. These tests will
produce individual student scores and results that will be forwarded home
annually to parents. To see the current school testing results, go to
www.mdreportcard.org
or follow the link below. At Hebron-Harman Elementary, 95 percent of
fourth-graders got advanced math scores (2006-2007).

this worry. Simply pay ahead. You need not use the meals on consecutive days.

Medical
Concerns
To request
that medication, prescription or over the counter, be administered to your child
during the school day at school, you must complete a Parent’s Request to
Administer Medication at School form, which includes several stipulations
and a signed order from a physician. The term medication refers to both
prescription and non-prescription medicine. Medication cannot be administered
to students without this completed paper-work. For your child’s safety, all
medications must be brought to school by an adult. All medications must be in a
pharmacy or manufacturer's labeled container. Allergies:
Parents of children with allergies are requested to keep
this information current with the school. This information is maintained on the
pupil information sheet in each child's record and is also recorded in the
elementary school nurse's office.
Illness or Accident:
Parents of children who become ill or have an accident
during the school day will be contacted. If parents cannot be contacted, the
emergency number will be called. Please make sure that your child's emergency
information is complete and always current. Please remember that we cannot keep
seriously ill students at school.
Medical Appointments:
We encourage you to try to schedule your child's medical
appointments around school hours. If this is not possible, you must come into
the front office to check your child out of the building. If the child returns
to school following the appointment, please report to the front office and
re-enter the child. These precautions are in effect to ensure your child's
safety. Parents planning to pick up students early for medical appointments
must send in a note to inform the teacher of those plans.
School Nurse:
Our school has a part time registered nurse, Ms. Tamla
Williams, RN, and a full time nursing assistant who is under the supervision of
a Anne Arundel County Health Department nurse.
If you have questions regarding health issues, call the
school health office @410.222.6930

Video Camera System
F. Hebron-Harman Elementary
School is equipped with a video camera system. It covers selected interior and
exterior public portions of the building and grounds. It is NOT monitored
constantly, but it is monitored during emergency situations. During certain
events, when the safety or security of students may be in question, authorized
personnel from local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be
given access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any
questions about the system, you should call Bob Yatsuk, Acting Supervisor of
School Security, at (410) 222-5083
Visitors to the school building
Parents are always welcome at F. Hebron-Harman Elementary School. When coming to school for any reason, state law requires that all persons report to the office. The main entrance must be used at all times when visiting.
All visitors must sign in and out of the office and wear a visitor's badge. In order to protect the safety and welfare of each student, no one may visit a classroom without the knowledge and permission of the principal.
It is necessary to schedule ALL conferences with teachers ahead of time;
Parents are encouraged to schedule appointments either before or after the
school day; in order
for teachers to make preparations for the conferences and more importantly, that
there is no interruption to the instructional program. We urge your
cooperation in this matter.
Weather Information
Changes to
school schedules caused by inclement weather or other emergency condition are
announced on major radio and television stations in the Baltimore, Washington,
and Annapolis areas, and are posted on the school system’s web site. In
addition, announcements are posted on
www.schools-out.com.
Please do not call
the school or central offices — listen to the radio or television or check the
school system’s web site at
www.aacps.org.
A “code red” announcement means that all school offices and central offices
are closed. A “code blue” announcement means that school office and
Central Office employees may report to work two hours later when schools are
