Art Class - 4th Grade Gets Emotional
April 17, 2008
After
reading a little about the famous artist Jackson Pollock (Pollock, Jackson
(1912-56) - American painter, the commanding figure of the Abstract
Expressionist movement) and discussing abstract art, 4th grade students tapped
into some of their own emotions this week in art class. Each student was asked
to think about a time when they experienced a very strong emotion and try to
relive those feelings. They could focus on a time when they felt extreme
happiness, sadness, anger, or fear. As their minds took them back to that
moment, I had them imagine that their own hand could feel that emotion and move
with that emotion. I asked "How would your hand move if it was feeling what you
are feeling?" Once they remembered this event, they were given a variety of
tools to use to apply paint onto paper and let those emotions out onto the
paper. They chose colors that represented the emotions they experienced as well
as a variety of brush strokes and paint applications to portray these feelings.
This was a very intense and important lesson for students. They were much
focused and in touch with some powerful events in their lives and watching them
paint these emotions, was absolutely amazing. Creating art is always a
wonderful way to deal or express emotions anytime in life and I am always
encouraging students to do so. --Ms. Shannon Stevens, Art Teacher

Tip: Students' Web site on Terrapins - 2nd grade
January 9, 2008
Our
school provides a temporary home for diamondback terrapins through the long,
cold winter. In June, they will be returned to their homes off the coast of
Poplar Island in the Chesapeake Bay. Some students from Mrs. Stafford's class
worked with Mrs. Jones to create a Web site dedicated to these wonderful
creatures.
