Lots of terrapins drown every year in commercial crab pots.

This here is an effective terrapin excluder

The population of terrapins is threatened to be endangered. One of the reasons is accidents each year.

A Death Sentence?

For instance, many females get road killed while crossing roads to lay their eggs. Some are served as soup because their meat is considered such a delicacy. It is the chief’s ingredient in terrapin soup. Also, many die following the destruction of their homes by the fishermen’s boat propellers. Another reason is predators, like raccoons, skunks, muskrats, normal rats and crows that eat their eggs. Many are also captured accidentally in crab pots each year.

Never Fear, Terrapin Savers are here!

The Wetlands Institute has now been increasing the population of terrapins. They have been creating solutions to prevent the deaths of terrapins. They have developed a simple rectangular wire frame that fits to the opening of a crab pot and serves as an effective terrapin excluder.

Sign Language Doesn’t Always Use Hands

No one knows for sure but from observations, they seem to communicate by behaviors with specific movements. When they are blinking, they seem to be communicating while facing each other. When two lift up from the ground and are in a “face off” stance, they would mostly be competing for something.
