Miss Demy and Miss Swan
on the wild side
|
The terrapins at Hebron-Harman are NOT pets. They are here so we can increase the population. When terrapins hatch they go straight into hibernation in the sand. When they wake up, they are really delicate and puny. At Hebron-Harman, we feed them all winter so they are oversized and stronger. Attack of the Terrapins Mrs. Dembeck’s terrapins are named Miss Demy and Miss Swan. The first day these two terrapins were measured was October 5th, 2007. She was 2.9 cm long and weighed only 10 grams. On February 26th, 2008, she had grown to 6.3 cm long and weighed 62 grams. An interesting fact about Miss Demy is that she delights in bite fingers when she gets fed. Miss Swan first measured 2.1 cm long and weighed in at 7 grams. In February, she was 5.5 cm long and weighed 40 grams. That’s a lot of growth! Miss Swan loves to pursue people as they stand beside her tank. Pretty Patterns Mrs. Poston’s terrapins are Smiley and Squirken. When Smiley arrived, she/he was 2.8 cm long and weighed only 11 grams. Now, Smiley is 6.2 cm long and weighs 55 grams. Smiley’s name comes from the smile on the back of his/her shell. On October 26th, 2007, Squirken was 2.7 cm long and weighed 14 grams. Just a few weeks ago, he weighed in at 50 grams and was 6.1 cm long. Squirken has a heart shape on his back. Hectic Hospital Mrs. Jones’ terrapins are Rocco and Spike. October 12, 2007 was Rocco’s first day to get measured. She/he was 10 grams in weight and 2.8 cm long. The latest time she was measured she was 5.1 cm long and weighed 60 grams. Cool facts are that she had to go to the hospital on January 25th for an infection on her leg. She is also the biggest terrapin at Harman. Spike weighed in last October at 12 grams and was 2.6 cm long. Now, he/she weighs 60 grams and is 5.3 cm long. Some neat things about Spike are that he/she hates liver and is very afraid of people. There’s just two more months before we say goodbye. |
