Mrs. Sandra Durant elected 2008 MESA Outstanding Teacher of the Year-AA County

As a Maryland MESA School Coordinator, Mrs. Durant is responsible for the operation of the Maryland MESA Program at the school level. Her responsibilities are numerous: Shares progress of Maryland MESA with the school principal and regional coordinator, submits school implementation plan to the Maryland MESA regional coordinator and/or Central Office, promotes school wide identification of Maryland MESA students, solicits guest speakers for school, communicates with the regional coordinator on a regular basis to share identified school needs and recommends improvements for the local Maryland MESA Program, keeps accurate records on student attendance, tutoring, grades, activities, and evaluations, completes an end of year evaluation of the school activities, and more.

When told the good news Mrs. Durant replied: “I could not have done anything without the support of my advisors, Ms. Alanna Clements, Mr. Jason Fahie, and Mrs. Stacey Jones. Together we make a collaborative team along with the assistance from Mr. Harbor and Mr. and Mrs. Downs”.

Once selected for participation in the Maryland MESA Program, students are exposed to a wide variety of activities. Conducted before, during, or after school, Maryland MESA activities are aimed at improving students' academic skills, especially in the areas of mathematics and science. In this manner, students are able to broaden their understanding of mathematical and scientific concepts, become aware of their career options, and begin to formulate academic plans that will lead to engineering and related careers. Students are encouraged to participate in a range of activities promoted by Maryland MESA including workshops and competitions held at local colleges and universities. By encouraging students to participate in a variety of activities, Maryland MESA Advisors stimulate academic abilities and boost students' self-confidence.

CONGRATULATIONS Mrs. Durant on being selected as 2008 MESA Teacher of the Year- AA County. This is a wonderful honor. Your hard work is appreciated.
